Frequently Asked Questions

Swallowing Therapy @ RASSW?
You will need to call 67364264 to make an appointment. Alternatively you could log on to our website and email us for an appointment. Our website is www.rassw.com
Is a doctor’s referral necessary for Speech Therapy Consultation?
It is a preferred option. However, we do accept ‘self-referrals’. If there is a need to touch base with a doctor after the initial consults, we would ask for your doctor’s contact or refer you to one. A referral enables communication with the doctor who is often responsible for the patient’s medical status. Some treatment modalities may need clearance from the doctor first. Sometimes this contact enables the therapist to make onward referrals especially if other concomitant problems are suspected.
What does the therapist expect to do during the initial appointment?
The initial session will involve a detailed interview to obtain a history of the client’s problems and the background. Following this, the therapist will commence the evaluation of the speech, language and or swallowing skills using formal and informal means. This may involve a variety of activities such as imitating or producing specific sounds, reading, conversing, reasoning, writing, expressing non-verbally, imitating oral-facial movement, swallowing small amounts of fluids and or foods etc.
How many sessions will I need? How frequently will I need to come for treatment?
This will depend on the nature and severity of the condition. Your therapist will give you an idea of the management plan and frequency of therapy sessions after the initial assessment.
How long will each session last?
Sessions can vary from 30 minutes to one hour depending on the client’s condition, goals set for the session and / or modality of treatment.
Will I experience pain or discomfort during therapy?
Speech and Language therapy does not involve activities that can induce pain or discomfort. There are some treatment modalities used in the management of swallowing problems such as electrical stimulation during which the patient feels different sensations such as vibration, crawling and or grab. This lasts only during the therapy. These are safe and approved modes of treatment.
What will be the involvement of the family?
Family involvement is very important in Speech Therapy. It is well known that clients with good family support often produce better outcomes from therapy. Caregivers will be involved in learning some strategies, techniques to help the client communicate and or swallow better. They may be required to follow through specific exercises at home to facilitate generalization of skills acquired by the client during the therapy sessions.
How will my referring doctor know about my progress with therapy?
Following the initial consultation and assessment, your therapist will send a detailed report to the referring doctor. Periodic updates on progress made with therapy will also be communicated to your doctor.
How much does it cost to attend Speech Therapy?
The cost of treatment will depend on the modality and length of treatment. The charges for outpatient therapy are time based and can vary from $ 120-$130 for an hour. Please ask your therapist for more details.
What are the payment modes?
Accepted modes of payments are: cash or cheque only. Please make cheques payable to REHAB ASIA SPEECH AND SWALLOW WORKS PTE LTD.
